Crystal-clear water of drinking water quality, over 2000 hours of sunshine a year, plus the fascinating natural landscapes of the Gailtal Alps: Lake Weissensee is not considered the pearl of Carinthia for nothing and is a paradise for campers who want to spend a relaxing holiday by the lake. The lake is an ideal holiday destination for families with children, but also for water sports enthusiasts who can go diving, sailing or surfing here. The unique natural landscapes of the Gailtal Alps also make the region very popular with nature lovers and active holidaymakers.
Lake Weissensee in the Austrian province of Carinthia is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. The water quality of the beautiful alpine lake is excellent and reaches drinking water quality. Thanks to its location on the south side of the Alps, the water is also pleasantly warm - water temperatures of up to 25 degrees are not uncommon in summer. Unlike many other lakes, Lake Weissensee is almost completely unspoilt and there are a whole range of great campsites around the lake, most of which are located close to the shore. A highlight: almost all the sites have their own beach - either right on the doorstep or just a few minutes' walk away. Guests can hire equipment for water sports or bicycles at many campsites. Dog owners are also welcome: There are three bathing areas for dogs by the lake. Some of the campsites have their own dog beach. Popular campsites on Lake Weissensee In addition to pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, the campsites on Lake Weissensee often also offer rental accommodation or mobile homes for hire. In summer, it is advisable to book well in advance as the sites are quickly fully booked.
The popular Müller campsite is situated in an idyllic location on the western shore of Lake Weissensee. The lakeshore is just a few metres away on foot and a cycle path runs right past the site. There is a large playground for children and a designated non-swimmer area on the lake. Dog owners are also well catered for, as there is a small dog beach on site.
The beautiful Knaller campsite is located in Techendorf, the main town in the Weissensee Nature Park. The site is located directly on the shore of the lake and guests have free access to the nearby lido, where there is also a children's playground. There is a well-stocked supermarket within walking distance. WLAN is free of charge for all guests of the campsite.
A little away from the hustle and bustle is the beautiful Ronacher campsite on the eastern shore of Lake Weissensee. For those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers, this site has been a favourite spot for years, offering everything you need for a camping holiday by the lake: the site's own lido, on-site supermarket and a highly recommended restaurant serving Carinthian specialities. Those who want to actively relax will also enjoy the well-equipped wellness area.
Lake Weissensee is known as a natural oasis, but there are also numerous places and small towns worth visiting in the region that are ideal destinations for day trips. The district town of Spittal an der Drau is the centre of Upper Carinthia and attracts visitors with a great old town and a rich cultural offering. The "sunny town" of Lienz in East Tyrol promises a Mediterranean lifestyle, a relaxed southern atmosphere and fantastic views of the Lienz Dolomites. Finally, a mixture of Alpine and Adriatic flair awaits visitors in Villach. The city in the three-country region of Carinthia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Slovenia is considered one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Austria.
The pretty little town of Villach is considered the urban centre of Carinthia, but is still very manageable. A highlight for visitors is the magnificent Renaissance Porcia Castle with its arcades. It is also home to the Museum of Folk Culture, which is well worth a visit. In summer, the castle becomes the stage for the annual comedy plays - a highlight of the Carinthian cultural summer.
Nestled between wooded mountain ridges and the fascinating rock formations of the Lienz Dolomites, the charming village of Lienz in East Tyrol awaits its visitors. With over 2000 hours of sunshine a year, the small town exudes Mediterranean flair, which is best enjoyed on a stroll through the charming old town. A highlight is the weekly town market, where culinary delicacies from East Tyrol are on offer. Active holidaymakers get their money's worth in the Zettersfeld hiking area. The Zettersfeld family park is also an entertaining leisure park for families with children.
Villach in southern Carinthia is best known for the Villach Carnival. During this time, the town is transformed into a veritable stronghold of fools. But it is also worth a visit outside the carnival season. There are numerous beautiful churches to visit in the city, including the magnificent parish church of Sankt Jakob in the centre. The ruins of Landskron Castle are also a popular excursion destination. Nearby is the monkey park, where Japanese macaques are kept. A visit to the Adler Arena is also worthwhile - in summer, birds of prey such as eagles and buzzards can be marvelled at in free flight here.
Of course, Austria has much more to offer than Carinthia. If you have a little time and want the full programme, go on a long journey and explore the whole country. Our dream route is just right for anyone who can't make up their mind: Tyrol, Carinthia or the Salzburg region?
