The harbour town of Saint-Raphaël belongs to the Var department and is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its main attraction is its location on the Mediterranean and its many beautiful sandy beaches. The Préalpes d'Azur Regional Nature Park lies to the north, with Cannes and Nice to the east and Saint-Tropez to the west.
Most of the campsites in Saint-Raphaël are located directly by the sea or in the immediate vicinity, which is why bathing fans are particularly drawn to the region. The town also has something for water sports enthusiasts: The options range from water skiing and wakeboarding to surfing, sailing and stand-up paddling (SUP). The idyllic hinterland, which is adorned by the fascinating Esterel Mountains, impresses nature lovers. Fields and vast forests invite you to go on extensive hikes and cycle tours. Culture enthusiasts can visit the neighbouring towns of Fréjus or Saint-Tropez. Saint-Raphaël itself also boasts sights such as the Notre-Dame de la Victoire basilica.
Travellers from Germany can travel to Saint-Raphaël directly via France or via Austria, Switzerland and Italy. From the southern German border, the harbour city is an average of 750 km away in both cases. The route via Lugano, Milan and Nice is particularly beautiful and varied. To do this, campers drive to Austria and follow the A14 motorway towards Altach, past the eastern shore of Lake Constance and the capital Bregenz.
In Switzerland, take the A13 motorway to Lugano. From Italy, holidaymakers follow the A9 and from Milan the A7. The European motorway E80 along the Mediterranean joins the A8 in France and takes you to Saint-Raphaël. At least one stopover should be made on this stage. Those interested in culture should stop in Milan halfway along the route. For nature lovers, there is Lake Lugano, which you cross in Switzerland. Very close to the motorway is the adjoining Lake Como in Italy, which invites you to take a walk.
The Var region pays off for every holidaymaker, with diving, quad biking, horse riding, rafting, Marineland and Luna Park on the programme. Or how about a boat trip to Saint-Tropez?
Luna Park in Fréjus promises fun for young and old with over 50 attractions. The youngest children spend plenty of time in Babyland, while teenagers and adults have fun on the roller coaster and the ghost train. Thrills for adrenaline junkies are guaranteed on the giant G-Force torsion bar and the Sky Rider, where you fly high through the air.
Marineland in Antibes is a good 50 kilometres from the campsites in Saint-Raphaël. This marine animal park is popular for its animal shows, in which killer whales, dolphins and seals perform real acrobatics. You can also discover sharks, rays and tropical fish in aquariums.
Boat trips to Saint-Tropez are offered from the Vieux Port - the old harbour - in Saint-Raphaël. Art lovers can visit the Musée de l'Annonciade and culture enthusiasts will love the citadel with its magnificent view of the city and the Naval Museum.
The cuisine of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is rather light in the coastal regions, in contrast to the hinterland. Fish and seafood characterise many dishes, such as bouillabaisse - a fish soup from Marseille. When camping in Saint-Raphaël, holidaymakers should also try the stockfish puree Brandade de Morue.
Provence is known for its wide variety of herbs. Thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, sage, basil and a whole host of other tasty spices are used to enhance dishes and create a flavourful experience. Ratatouille, for example, is enriched by this extensive palette. The vegetable stew made from aubergines, courgettes, peppers, tomatoes and onions gets its fine flavour from regional olive oil, lots of garlic and fresh herbs.
In summer, travellers camping in Saint-Raphaël can expect warm temperatures and many hours of sunshine. July and August are the hottest months with temperatures of up to 27 degrees Celsius. The average water temperature during this time is around 23 degrees Celsius, which is particularly popular with swimming fans.
However, June and September are just as inviting for swimming and sunbathing, with temperatures of up to 24 degrees Celsius. The sea is then refreshing at around 21 degrees Celsius. Summer is followed by autumn, with November being the month with the most rainfall. In contrast, July has the least rainfall. The coldest period is from December to February. With an average of 8 degrees Celsius, the mild winter in Saint-Raphaël is also attractive for campers.
