The province of Gotland not only includes the second largest island in the Baltic Sea, but also the island of Farö, which is only separated from Gotland by a sound. Camping with children and dogs is possible in the immediate vicinity of the beach on both Gotland and Farö. The family-friendly and spacious campsites in the province of Gotland offer a particularly large number of pitches for caravans and motorhomes right by the water.
Most campsites in the province of Gotland are very close to nature and idyllic. Between tall pine trees on the edge of wide fields, many pitches are in the first row on the beach, so that the sound of the Baltic Sea can be heard in the evening and the fresh sea breeze revitalises and inspires tired campers in the morning. Similar to the island of Öland, the beaches and the many hours of sunshine are particularly appreciated. In Sweden, these campsites have become the most popular destinations in the summer months in recent years. In the high season, ferry crossings are particularly popular.
Even near the medieval and lively island capital of Visby, there are usually campsites just a few metres from the sandy beaches or the nearest cycle paths. Active campers and families can expect a wide range of leisure activities, from saunas, swimming pools and playgrounds to mini golf courses. The historical sights and beautiful golf courses are also not far away when camping in the province of Gotland. Holiday resorts such as Camping Åminne Fritid with its pitches and tranquil stugas, Tofta Camping, Lickershamn Semesterby, Camping Snackan in klintehamn or Visby Strandby Camping offer a very relaxing camping holiday on the island.
The campsites in the province of Gotland are in great demand in both the high and low seasons. However, the peak season is summer and the days around Midsummer, when the Swedes themselves have almost six weeks of holiday.
The most beautiful beaches on the island of Gotland are right on the doorstep of Tofta Camping. In addition to the classic pitches, tranquil stugas, small holiday homes, can also be booked here. In the high season, however, guests can expect the beaches on the Baltic Sea to be full to bursting, which is when retreats are particularly valuable. The holiday complex with beach bar, sports facilities, a modern sanitary building and access to an outdoor pool makes for a very varied camping holiday.
Visby Strandby Camping is particularly appreciated for its exceptionally beautiful location. The neighbouring lido with a 400-metre-long bay, bathing jetties and sunbathing lawn is naturally a great attraction for guests in summer. The cosy stugas for all campers without their own equipment are very popular on the site. The proximity to the town of Visby, which was one of the most famous trading centres in Europe in the Middle Ages, should be an enrichment, especially from a cultural point of view. A trip to the Raukar, a stalactite formation on the beach, is well worthwhile. The most famous of these is called "Hoburgsgubben".
In Sweden, it is light for a long time in summer and dark for a long time in winter - as is the case when camping in the province of Gotland. However, the islands are also characterised by many hours of sunshine in the cold season, as the Baltic Sea winds quickly blow the clouds away.
The climate on Gotland and Farö is considered mild with an average annual temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius. The best time to visit (peak holiday season) for campers is from June to August, when the thermometer rises above 20 degrees Celsius and the water temperature is 16 degrees Celsius. In the winter months it can be freezing cold, when almost all campsites in the province of Gotland close their doors. The season usually runs from the beginning of May to the beginning of September.
