The small town of Torroella de Montgrí, located at the foot of the Montgrí mountain in the Catalan province of Girona, is recommended for relaxed but varied camping. The most beautiful sandy beaches on the Costa Brava and the Montgrí Nature Park are just a few kilometres away. In Torroella de Montgrí itself, the picturesque old town invites you to take a stroll. There are suitable campsites in the countryside, especially for camping with a motorhome or caravan.
The campsites around Torroella de Montgrí are characterised by their different locations. For hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers, a campsite adjacent to the Montgrí massif is ideal, while a campsite right on the beach is particularly suitable for sun worshippers. The fine, gently sloping sandy beaches are ideal for a holiday with children. However, those who appreciate a central location will also find a suitable site in the immediate vicinity of the city. The lovingly designed campsites of a manageable size convey a familiar and informal atmosphere, which quickly makes holidaymakers feel at home. Communal pitches offer the opportunity to make new contacts, cook together or enjoy a cosy get-together over a glass of wine.
If you are travelling by motorhome or car, you will have to cover around 1,000 km after crossing the German border. If you are travelling from southern Germany, you will probably decide to take the fast route through Austria and Switzerland. Please note that vignettes must be purchased for both countries. However, Switzerland only offers relatively expensive annual vignettes, so to avoid having to buy a vignette, you can take the slightly longer route via Karlsruhe, which also corresponds to the route taken by those travelling from northern and central Germany. In France, the motorway heads south, past Lyon and then along the French Mediterranean coast until it reaches the Spanish border. After crossing the border, you are already in the Catalan province of Girona. From here, it is only a few kilometres to a campsite in Torroella de Montgrí, and a stopover is recommended during the long drive through France, for example near Valence, where the idyllic greenery of the hilly Rhone Valley is enchanting. But you can also take a break around Montpellier, on the south coast, for an invigorating dip in the sea.
A camping holiday in Torroella de Montgrí can be varied. The numerous options for activities and excursions range from mountain biking, hiking and birdwatching to diving and snorkelling, visits to medieval ruins and strolling through the alleyways of historic town centres.
The Torroella de Montgrí region harbours several cultural treasures. Historic villages such as Peratallada, Pals, Sant Iscle and Ullastret evoke the magic of the past with their medieval architecture. In Ullastret, you can visit the ruins of the largest Iberian settlement in Catalonia from the 6th century. The Castell del Montgrí, the region's landmark, is located on the mountain massif and promises breathtaking views over the landscape and the coast as far as the Medes Islands.
Consisting of a group of seven small uninhabited islands, the Medes Islands are considered the most beautiful marine reserve in the western Mediterranean. Just 1 kilometre from the mainland, a fascinating underwater world is waiting to be discovered. On a guided dive or snorkelling tour, you can observe a colourful paradise of corals, fish and other impressive marine creatures.
A holiday in Catalonia should not be without indulging in culinary delights. Catalan cuisine is just as varied as the region's landscapes. Imaginative yet harmonious creations of savoury and sweet dishes as well as fish and meat are a real treat for the palate, but there are also traditional delicacies for the less adventurous. These include paella, a rice dish with fresh seafood or pa amb tomàquet. The typical starter consists of freshly baked baguette with tomato, olive oil and the homemade garlic cream Allioli. Catalonia is also home to some excellent wine-growing regions: Light, fruity white wines provide a tangy cool-down in the hot midday hours, while full-bodied and aromatic red wines are served with dinner.
Camping in Torroella de Montgrí attracts sun worshippers, hiking enthusiasts and water sports fans alike. Hiking holidaymakers prefer the months between April and June and from September to November. Due to the pleasant temperatures, these times are particularly suitable for exploring the Montgrí mountain massif with its nature park of the same name on foot or by bike. In the summer months, beach holidaymakers can look forward to temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius, with a sea breeze always providing refreshment. In spring, the Tramuntana, the land wind coming from the north-west Pyrenees, attracts kite and windsurfers. The cool water temperature of 15 degrees Celsius in spring rises to 24 degrees Celsius in summer and drops to 18 degrees Celsius in November.
