The Sogn of Fjordane region offers campers an extensive mountain and fjord landscape with large differences in altitude. Camping in the mountains near the glacier is just as possible as camping at lower altitudes close to the fjord. There are attractive hiking routes at all altitudes around the Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest continental glacier in the north-east, and the Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord, further south.
Numerous fjord arms, some of which drain glacier water, wind their way through the massive rock massifs of the mountain landscape in Sogn og Fjordane. Europe's largest continental glacier, the Jostedalsbreen, covers an area of around 487 square kilometres. Due to the great differences in altitude, mountain lovers will also come across impressive waterfalls on their hiking route.
Many campsites in Sogn og Fjordane are located around the numerous larger and smaller fjords and fjord arms in the area. From here you often have a unique view of the impressive landscape with the mountain massif behind you. For mountain and glacier enthusiasts, however, there are also campsites not far from the mountain and glacier entrances.
Despite Norway's northerly location, the climate in Sogn og Fjordane is relatively mild, especially near the coast, due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the regulating properties of the numerous fjords. The warm air brought in by the ocean from the south-east often encounters colder air from the direction of the mountain range inland and breaks up, especially near the coast, resulting in heavy rainfall and high humidity.
The months with the least rainfall in the region are April to June, while autumn is the period with the most rainfall. Inland and up towards the mountains and glaciers, the climate is colder on average than on the coast. Some areas in the high mountains and on the glacier plateau are characterised by permafrost. Average water temperatures are in the single digits for most of the year.
