Ommen is the perfect place to relax when camping with children in the Netherlands. The nature of the region can be explored on excursions around the River Vechte. The best way to get out and about is on foot, by bike, horse or boat. The number of campsites in Ommen's surroundings is impressive.
Ommen is known far beyond the Netherlands for its campsites. The sites are usually located on one of the rivers in the water-rich region. This makes it easy to take a rowing boat directly from the motorhome onto the water. Many also take advantage of the favourable conditions for fishing, while lush meadows await holidaymakers on land. The best way to explore these is on horseback. The destination of such an excursion could be the tranquil Eerde Castle 4 kilometres south of Ommen. Families with children can visit the nearby Hellendoorn theme and leisure park. This is a fascinating place with roller coasters and several water slides.
To reach Ommen and its campsites, you first have to travel far to the west of Germany. Coming from the east, it is best to first take the A2 motorway, which leads past Hanover in the direction of the A30. The latter offers a direct connection to the Netherlands via Osnabrück. Cross the border at Bad Bentheim to Oldenzaal. From here, it is only 60 kilometres to your final destination. If you are travelling from Bremen or Hamburg, you can take the A1 to Cloppenburg and then turn off onto the B213 to Meppen. From the south, the Rhineland is a favourable stopover. In Cologne, holidaymakers can visit the famous cathedral and go shopping on the Kö in Düsseldorf. To continue to Ommen, it is best to take the A31 motorway and turn west at Bad Bentheim. If you feel like it, you can also visit the legendary sulphur and brine thermal baths in the ancient county of Bentheim.
The heathland and picturesque rivers around Ommen are perfect for cycling trips and rowing boat tours.
Avonturenpark Hellendoorn is located just a few kilometres south of Ommen. Three roller coasters await visitors here. There are also several water slides and wild water rides to discover. In total, you can look forward to 30 exciting attractions in the theme park.
The Vecht and its tributary the Regge offer excellent terrain for exploring by rowing boat. Many of the campsites in Ommen offer their guests canoe hire, so you can get on the water straight from your motorhome. If you fancy it, you can even fish in the rivers and lakes and enjoy a delicious dinner.
Cyclists can follow the River Vecht and reach the provincial capital of Zwolle with its beautiful city centre after around 30 km. Just a few minutes away from here, the small Zwarte Meer offers good conditions for sailing. The Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park with its vast heathland landscapes is also a beautiful destination.
In the province of Overijssel, you can rely on fresh produce from the surrounding farms. Roast pork and smoked ham sausage are usually accompanied by kale and mashed potatoes. Dutch travellers are also delighted by the numerous cheese varieties. Gouda, Edam and Leerdammer are among the best-known varieties. In the cheese shops in Ommen and the surrounding area, you can pick up a tasty souvenir to take home. Many delicacies also come to Ommen from the coast, such as pickled matjes with onions and mussels. However, it is more common here to eat freshwater fish from the surrounding lakes and rivers. Snacks are also important in the Netherlands: deep-fried croquettes with filling, frikandel mince rolls and the famous chips are hallmarks of the regional cuisine.
Campers are particularly drawn to Ommen and the Overijssel region between May and October. Then you can expect outside temperatures with an average maximum of 23 degrees Celsius. Sometimes the values are even higher. The lakes of Overijssel warm up to around 19 degrees Celsius in midsummer, and in May and June, as well as in September and October, the temperature in Ommen is still around 20 degrees Celsius. These pleasantly mild temperatures are ideal for excursions by rowing boat, horse or bicycle. Particularly little rainfall can be expected between March and June. In the winter months it gets cooler and many campsites close.
