When camping in Chioggia-Sottomarina, Veneto shows its most beautiful side. The small fishing town in the south of the Venice lagoon is nowhere near as crowded as its big sister and, unlike Venice, things are much more relaxed in Chioggia. Romantic strolls through the narrow streets of the enchanting old town centre are just as possible as wonderful days camping by the sea on the Adriatic coast. The beach in the Sottomarina neighbourhood is just a short walk away.
Most of the campsites in Chioggia are located along the east coast south of the Sottomarina district. The beach sections Bagni Lido d'Oro, Playa Punta Canna or Bagni Lungomare are, like a good dozen other beaches in the immediate vicinity, excellently equipped with umbrellas, sunbeds, public showers and toilets as well as restaurants. It is also possible to hire water sports equipment on site.
The campsites are well equipped and are primarily aimed at beach holidaymakers and families with children. The popular sandy beach of Sottomarina is just a short walk away, but the campsites usually also have swimming pools and a wide range of leisure activities, entertainment teams and numerous sports activities for active campers.
In addition to pitches in various categories, campers can usually also book rental accommodation. Families can stay in spacious mobile homes, chalets, garden villas or bungalows. Some particularly luxurious glamping accommodation is also available to rent.
The surrounding area of Chioggia is characterised by vast cultural landscapes and makes relaxing walks along the lagoon a pleasure. The medieval town centre of Chioggia is just a stone's throw away from the campsites. The medieval buildings and colourful houses of the town built on stilts on the Laguna del Lusenzo make for great photo opportunities. Markets with fresh vegetables, fruit and fish provide the best ingredients for the barbecue.
Dogs are allowed at a number of campsites in Chioggia. The Isamar holiday village, for example, has its own private beach where dogs are also allowed in the water, as well as a dog meadow. In general, however, dog owners should enquire about the rules at the campsite in advance of their camping holiday. There are also some sections of the well-known beach in Sottomarina that are designated as dog beaches, for example in Diga Sottomarina. Outside the beaches, it is best to keep dogs on a lead.
Chioggia has a whole range of campsites and holiday villages to suit every taste. Here is a selection of the most beautiful facilities for a successful camping holiday by the sea in Veneto.
Large, family-friendly campsite in Sottomarina, just a few steps from the sea. The pitches are situated on pleasantly soft lawns and offer plenty of shade. Chalets and air-conditioned mobile homes for up to 6 people are also available for hire. The entertainment team, the large pool and the restaurant with delicious regional dishes ensure a good atmosphere.
5-star holiday village right by the sea near the village of Isolaverde. The large park-like complex has a total of 8 swimming pools, several restaurants and a large selection of rental accommodation. The holiday village also has a special area for campers with dogs, a large entertainment team and a wide range of sports courses and activities.
This campsite on the Brenta River offers a great view of the Adriatic Sea. Guests can best enjoy the views from the extensive private beach, which is part of the complex. Those who prefer to relax by the pool can choose from two swimming pools with a water slide, and there are also several sports fields for tennis, football, basketball and beach volleyball. There is a separate area on the beach for dog owners.
There are several options for travelling to Chioggia by caravan or motorhome. The easiest route from Germany is via Munich, from where it is 554 kilometres to the destination. The journey starts on the A8 motorway via Rosenheim and then towards Kufstein in Austria. Continue on the E60 motorway past Wörgl and Innsbruck. Travellers finally reach the Italian border crossing at the Brenner Tunnel on the A13 in a southerly direction. The Alpine landscape along the A22 is impressive and a real nature experience. The city of Bolzano in South Tyrol lies halfway along the motorway. This is the ideal place for a long break in one of the many traditional restaurants offering typical regional specialities. The A22 then takes you further south, past cities such as Trento and Verona and the legendary Lake Garda a good 10 kilometres to the west of the route.
At Verona, the A22 finally becomes the A4 and runs eastwards between wide fields. The last two larger towns of Vicenza and Padua are best bypassed before Chioggia comes into view. Please note: When driving through Austria, campers need a day vignette and Italy also has a toll system on the motorways.
Chioggia is considered by many holidaymakers to be the better alternative to touristy and overcrowded Venice. In addition to the enchanting old town centre with its ancient architecture and Italian charm, the region offers numerous exciting excursion destinations in the surrounding area. So there's certainly no chance of boredom on a camping holiday in Chioggia.
Chioggia is a bit like Venice, but more personal and authentic. The charm of the former fishing town is particularly evident in the historic old town centre in the typical Italian-Gothic architectural style of the Veneto region. The Canale Veda with its colourful houses and old churches and the main street Corso del Popolo, where a daily fish market takes place alongside countless cafés and shops, are particularly worth seeing.
The almost 6-kilometre-long and very wide beach of Sottomarina is just a few minutes away from the city centre. Chioggia is therefore an excellent place to combine a city trip with a beach holiday. If the large beach is too crowded in summer, you can head a little further out to Isolaverde. The private beach costs an entrance fee, but it's definitely worth it!
This huge nature park south of Chioggia marks the delta where the River Po flows into the Adriatic Sea. Countless natural canals and side arms allow for extensive excursions by boat. The conditions are also ideal for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. The nature reserve is particularly famous for its rich flora and fauna with wetlands, forests, rare birds and reptiles.
Even if it's a cliché, every lover of Italy should have visited Venice at least once in their life. A camping holiday in Chioggia is the perfect opportunity for a trip to the world-famous city of masks and gondolas - where you can compare the tranquillity of Chioggia with the hustle and bustle of Venice.
As well as travelling by car via the mainland, it is also possible to reach Venice by water taxi. The ferries depart from Chioggia harbour and first head for the island of Pellestrina. From there, the public bus takes you to Lido di Venezia, where the last leg of the journey is again by boat to the harbour in Venice. As a reward, spectacular buildings such as St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal await visitors.
As an old harbour town on the Adriatic, fish and pasta are important components of the local cuisine in Chioggia. Popular starters include scallops with garlic sauce or bibarasse in cassopipa - mussels cooked in garlic, olive oil and white wine. The main courses are also mainly prepared using freshly caught ingredients.
The risotto a la ciosòta, for example, consists of seafood, fish, parmesan, white wine and garlic. The regional ring-shaped bread Bossolà and wines from Veneto go perfectly with it. Desserts also have a long tradition in the region around Chioggia: the Smegiassa cake made from flour, black honey, pumpkin, pine nuts, sultanas and sugar has been baked for centuries.
For a successful beach holiday, we recommend a stay in the high season between July and August. During this time, the thermometer climbs up to 30 degrees Celsius and the wonderfully warm Adriatic Sea invites you to enjoy a swim.
The low season in June or early September is also well suited for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts with pleasant water temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Hikes along the natural lagoons and through the surrounding nature parks are particularly romantic, especially in spring and autumn.
There are hardly any visitors in winter, although there are a few campsites and permanent pitches in Chioggia that are open all year round. Peace, tranquillity and lower prices are among the main advantages of the cold season.
