Carnac is a holiday resort on the Atlantic coast of Brittany. Campers and sports enthusiasts alike can relax on the beach. Sailing trips, cycling tours and, above all, visits to the more than 3,000 menhirs lined up in rows guarantee an unforgettable holiday. After their excursions, water lovers will be delighted to find a campsite with a pool where they can splash around and have fun.
Many of Carnac's campsites are located by the sea or just a few kilometres from the coast. The sheltered bay of Quiberon is the ideal setting for a relaxing break. The sights, such as the millennia-old rock formations, are also very close to the accommodation.
Holidaymakers will find plenty of pitches for their motorhomes and caravans. There are also attractive bungalows and mobile homes to rent for guests who are only travelling by car. Visitors can expect both simple campsites and comfortable facilities for families, couples and groups of friends. In the rainy season from November to March, most providers in Carnac close their doors and reopen in April or May.
Regardless of which German city holidaymakers are travelling from, from Paris campers generally take the Paris/Rennes A11 motorway and from Rennes the E50 motorway towards Lorient-Auray. Take the Carnac exit to reach your destination.
Travellers from Hamburg like to drive the 1390 km to Paris via Bremen and Essen. Holidaymakers from Berlin drive around 1540 km via Hanover and Liège. The journey from Frankfurt am Main via Metz and Reims, which is around 1060 kilometres long, is comparatively short. Travellers from Munich travel a whopping 1350 km via Stuttgart, Nancy and Troyers. When planning your journey in the summer months, you should be aware of the high volume of traffic. Ideally, you should therefore travel outside the weekends.
If you are travelling long distances by car, motorhome or caravan, you need to plan enough stopovers. A longer break is required after 1000 kilometres at the latest. For a stopover in France, we recommend a campsite away from the motorways. After Paris, for example, there are some beautiful places near Orsay that are ideal for an extended break.
Carnac is particularly famous for its prehistoric stone formations. However, in addition to the historical sights, there are also other activities such as gambling, water sports, cycling tours and boat trips.
Carnac has an exclusive casino with a programme for the whole family. The gambling machines or a game of poker or roulette provide thrills. Varied shows also enchant the youngsters. The restaurant and bars cater for the physical well-being of guests.
When camping in Carnac, holidaymakers usually stay close to various cycle paths. Mountain bikes and city bikes are available for hire and nothing stands in the way of a tour along the coastal areas, forests and fields of Brittany. A beautiful route for beginners leads along various beaches to La Trinité-sur-Mer. More experienced cyclists can take the route to the southern tip of the Quiberon peninsula.
The Gulf of Morbihan is a salty inland sea that can be perfectly discovered on sailing or sports boat trips. Fascinating landscapes such as the Wadden Sea, which is the ideal habitat for young animals, and the numerous water birds cast a spell over visitors.
The cuisine of Brittany is traditional and flavoursome. Specialities include fish dishes with sea bream, hake and ray. A speciality is cotriade, a fish soup with potato broth and toasted country bread. Mussels and oysters are also frequently found on restaurant menus.
If you prefer something more savoury, you should visit a crêperie and order a galette complète. The wheat flour flatbread is filled with ham, fried egg and savoury grated cheese. Of course, there is also a good selection for those with a sweet tooth. A dessert is usually served after the cheese dessert. A heavenly sin is Far Breton, a casserole made from milk and eggs with prunes. Breton cider is typically drunk with all courses.
With over 2000 hours of sunshine a year, the Carnac coastline is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts. Overall, temperatures are mild all year round and only fall below freezing in extremely exceptional cases. However, if you are travelling to South Brittany between November and March, you should expect frequent rainfall. With 18 days of rain, January is the wettest month.
