As everywhere in Holland, guests can hire bikes at the campsite in Winterswijk and explore the beautiful landscapes of the Achterhoek on two wheels. The most beautiful campsites in Winterswijk also offer playgrounds and swimming pools with pools and children's pools.

In the high season, children are kept entertained with children's entertainment programmes. Entertainment programmes and sports activities for young and old ensure that there is never a dull moment at the campsite. The holiday complexes are also the perfect starting point for excursions in the surrounding area.

The Het Hilgelo recreational area, for example, offers guests many water sports options. Discovering the famous recreational lake Het Hilgelo by canoe or pedalo is very popular. Those looking for peace and quiet can take one of the many beautiful hiking trails and explore this wonderful province of Holland on foot.

How to get to the Achterhoek

If holidaymakers are travelling from Hanover, we recommend the almost 270 km long tour via Oyenhausen and Osnabrück. If travelling from Dresden, there are several routes to choose from: The shortest route of 615 kilometres takes you past Leipzig, Kassel and Dortmund. Here it is worth making a short stop in the historic city centre of Kassel. The other route takes campers past Chemnitz, Erfurt and Dortmund before arriving in Winterswijk.

Holidaymakers from Munich can choose between several routes. The shortest route of around 695 kilometres leads past the historic cities of Nuremberg, Würzburg and Dortmund to the Dutch border. Here it is worth taking a break at the Würzburg Nord motorway service station, surrounded by picturesque vineyards and with a view of the beautiful city. Culture lovers can also opt for a detour to the picturesque old town of Nuremberg.

After the border, it is only a few kilometres to Winterswijk. On the other route, which is just over 720 km long, camping holidaymakers pass the enchanting cities of Heidelberg, Cologne and Essen. The former royal seat of Heidelberg, situated on the Neckar, is ideal for a stopover. From Essen, it is just under 90 kilometres to Holland.

Activities and excursions

The area around Winterswijk is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Sometimes it almost seems as if time has stood still in the province of Gelderland. Sports enthusiasts will find an ideal retreat in the secluded woodlands and fields.

Adventurous hiking excursions to rustic farms

Hiking enthusiasts who decide to take a day trip through the idyllic natural scenery should definitely visit one of the many farms. Here you can learn all about how traditional cheese or clogs are made.

During the hike, nature lovers will discover a unique landscape with streams, heaths, moors and forests. Cyclists also get their money's worth here: paths that lead through the Korenburgerveen nature reserve and past country estates such as Mentink and Keunenhuis are particularly popular with active people. Guests can enjoy the picturesque scenery of the Wooldse Veen moorland or the Winterswijk quarry.

Goat cheese farm "De Brömmels"

A particularly popular excursion destination is the farm "De Brömmels". This goat cheese farm (Geitenkaasboerderij) near Winterswijk has its own cheese dairy and farm shop. Visitors can buy many regional products on the sales floor. There are also guided tours with cheese tasting and walks with goats in the forest.

Excursion to Bredevoort

A few kilometres from Winterswijk is the Dutch town of Bredevoort, which has made a name for itself in recent years as an important book town. The special thing about this medieval town is the antiquarian bookshops and bookshops, which are usually open even on Sundays and can be found on every corner. Bookworms who are interested in new books should definitely not miss a visit to the regular book fairs and exhibitions. Last but not least, Bredevoort is also famous for its historic town centre with its medieval streetscape and the Prins van Oranje windmill.

Gastronomy in Holland

Dutch cuisine is best known for its hearty dishes. Many dishes are prepared with meat, vegetables, milk and butter. Locals love to cook with fresh fish caught in the local waters. Stamppot is a particular speciality: A stew consisting of mashed potatoes and various vegetables. Poffertjes, which are made from a yeast dough and then served with icing sugar and melted butter, are a popular dessert for public holidays. The meat roll known as frikandel, which consists of pork, beef or poultry, is eaten with homemade ketchup and finely chopped onions.

Best time to travel for a camping holiday in Winterswijk

Thanks to its location in Central Europe and its proximity to the North Sea, the Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate and is characterised by warm summers and mild winters. During the summer months, the maximum temperature is around 22 degrees Celsius. In addition to the mild spring and autumn months, this is the ideal time for an active holiday in the Achterhoek region.

Pleasant temperatures also make camping holidays in Winterswijk interesting for sports enthusiasts at this time. Visitors can explore the county on long walks and hiking tours to rustic farms. This weather is also ideal for city tours. The North Sea retains the heat, so temperatures average three degrees Celsius in winter.
