Camping in Hamburg combines city flair with proximity to nature. The cosmopolitan city on the Elbe is therefore perfect for campers who want to combine exciting city trips with relaxing cycle tours along the Elbe and excursions to the Wadden Sea. The campsites are located in idyllic surroundings and are well connected to the many sights of the harbour city. There are also a number of motorhome pitches in the city centre.
Coastal flair, screeching seagulls and salty sea air. Big city hustle and bustle on the Reeperbahn in St. Pauli and fish sandwiches at the harbour. This is Hamburg - the second largest city in Germany and the country's most important harbour city thanks to its location on the Elbe. It is also not far from the North Sea coast. This makes Hamburg a favourite destination for campers who want to enjoy the fresh air on the coast.
Most of the campsites are located on the outskirts and at the gates of Hamburg. The perfect location for visiting the harbour, the Reeperbahn and the other famous sights of Hamburg. Particularly popular are the campsites on the Elbe, some of which even have a beach. If you are travelling to Hamburg by motorhome, you will also find a number of motorhome stopovers in central locations. There are even pitches at the famous fish market and on the harbour road: Here, campers can experience city life and the hustle and bustle of the city at close quarters and, in good weather, relax in the sun on the Elbe beach.
The campsites in Hamburg are well equipped and often offer rental accommodation, mobile homes or holiday flats in addition to pitches. You can hire bicycles or canoes at many sites and some of the sites on the Elbe also have mooring facilities for campers with their own boat.
It couldn't be more central: the Buchholz campsite is located in the centre of Hamburg near Hagenbeck Zoo and is the first port of call for campers who want to explore Hamburg on a city trip. Thanks to its ideal location, the city centre is even within walking distance. There are also good public transport connections.
The place for those who want to camp a little further out. The KNAUS Campingpark is located north of the city centre in a beautiful location in a large park. Despite its proximity to the A7 motorway, the site is very quiet. The bus stop is only a few minutes' walk away. From here it is about 15 minutes to the city centre.
The Elbecamp campsite is the best choice for nature lovers. As the name suggests, the site is located directly on the banks of the Elbe in the idyllic Falkenstein nature reserve. The unspoilt pitches are located between trees and bushes and offer a surprisingly unspoilt camping experience right on the outskirts of the city. A real insider tip thanks to the beach location, especially in summer!
Hamburg offers countless opportunities for activities in the city and excursions in the surrounding area. A classic is the Elbe beach at Övelgönne, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Hamburg. Also not to be missed is a harbour cruise in the port of Hamburg. And if you want to get out into nature, take a trip to the North Sea and the Wadden Sea National Park, for example.
The Elbe beach at Övelgönne is the perfect place to switch off and unwind. The sandy beach stretches for around 13 kilometres to the mouth of the Elbe and provides a holiday feeling in the middle of the city. Barbecues are permitted in many places and there are countless cosy restaurants and cafés near the beach. Övelgönne is a worthwhile destination even without the sandy beach - the beautiful houses are among the most sought-after addresses in the city.
It's not far from Hamburg to the coast. Friedrichskoog in the Wadden Sea National Park on the North Sea can be reached by car in just under an hour and a half. Here you can take part in a tour of the mudflats and experience the wonder of the low tide with all your senses. While you wade through the mud with your feet, you learn more about the wildlife of the mudflats and the formation of the Wadden Sea. If you want, you can also take part in a special crab fishing tour.
The harbour cruise belongs to Hamburg like the Ampelmännchen belongs to Berlin! Various providers offer trips lasting from half an hour to two hours. Depending on the water level, the big harbour cruise from Barkassen Meyer takes you to the Speicherstadt, past the Hamburg Elbe bridges, the container terminals and the large docks of Blohm + Voss. There is also humorous information about Hamburg's harbour world.
The flat landscape around Hamburg makes the city the perfect starting point for long bike tours. A classic is the Elbe cycle path, which you can cycle from Hamburg in several directions: Either to the coast to Cuxhaven or towards central Germany, for example to Wittenberge. No matter which side you choose: The wonderful river landscapes of the Elbe offer great scenic experiences throughout and make a tour on the Elbe cycle path an absolute pleasure.
