Ede and the rich water and meadow landscapes surrounding the small town are ideal for a leisure-oriented camping holiday with the children. Excursions by bike or on foot through the Hoge Veluwe National Park are particularly worthwhile. South of Ede, the Waal arm of the Rhine runs through the Netherlands and is ideal for kayaking tours and relaxing on the banks.
The most practical thing about the campsites in Ede is their location in the middle of nature. The Veluwe forest area is particularly worth seeing, which holidaymakers can explore on foot or by bike, for example. Visitors can also take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Rhine to go fishing or explore the waters by boat. Culturally interesting cities such as Utrecht and Arnhem are within easy reach - the nearby A30 motorway provides direct access to the municipalities by motorhome. There is also plenty to see in Ede itself. The Old Church and the Tile Museum, which specialises in this ancient craft, are well worth a visit.
To reach the Ede campsites by motorhome, you first have to drive far into the west of Germany. You can make a stopover in the Ruhr area or the Rhineland. Cologne offers a wide selection of landmarks with its Roman-Germanic Museum and the cathedral. In Düsseldorf, travellers can stroll along the Kö and shop in one of the boutiques, before reaching the Netherlands via the A3 at Emmerich am Rhein. Nature lovers can take a detour to the mighty river and stop for a picnic. Then head to Arnhem, one of the most important cities in the west of the Netherlands. Historical architecture can be admired in the town's open-air museum. From Arnhem it is only 20 kilometres to Ede. Some of the best campsites in the region are even closer, on the edge of the Veluwezoom and De Hoge Veluwe national parks. You should plan on travelling about 170 km from Cologne. Travellers from Frankfurt should reckon with 350 km, from Munich with 730 km. Travellers from northern Germany and northern eastern Germany can drive via Hanover and Osnabrück to Hengelo in the Netherlands and reach Ede via Apeldoorn.
With its rich forest and heathland landscapes and the nearby branches of the Rhine, Ede offers a great recreational area for camping holidaymakers.
De Hoge Veluwe National Park fascinates with its picturesque woodlands and heathland. The best way to explore the region is on a hike and, with a little patience, you can spot red deer and rare bird species. Culture fans will also find the Helene Kröller Museum in the centre of the reserve, which houses the second largest collection of Vincent van Gogh's works in the world.
There are over 43 kilometres of cycle paths through De Hoge Veluwe alone, which leisure fans can explore on one of the free hire bikes. There are also marvellous excursion routes along the Waal and Nederrijn branches of the Rhine. The Ouwehands Dierenpark zoo near Vreewijk, for example, is a great destination.
The Rhine forms numerous side arms and canals in Gelderland, where travellers can set off on exploratory kayak tours. Many campsites near Ede even offer inexpensive kayak hire. It is also possible to go swimming at some of the lakes in the area.
The Gelderland region, where Ede is located, is known for its organic farming. When visiting the country inns, holidaymakers can try real home cooking, such as hearty roast pork and smoked sausage. This is usually served with mashed potatoes with vegetables and kale.
The snack culture in the Netherlands is also significant. French fries are deep-fried several times and served with homemade sauces. You should also try classics such as minced meat rolls, frikandels and stuffed croquettes. For dessert, sweet pancakes, waffles and potato pancakes are popular in Ede. One of the best restaurants in Ede is the Planken Wambuis on the edge of the Veluwe National Park. In the city centre, we recommend the Vroeger restaurant and the Pomphuis.
Camping in Ede is a good idea, especially between May and October. Most holidaymakers are drawn to the province of Gelderland in the height of summer. Temperatures then reach an average maximum of around 23 degrees Celsius. Occasionally, the temperatures can be higher in July and August. In the region's lakes, you can expect water temperatures of around 19 degrees Celsius. Many excursionists, for example hikers, cyclists and kayak fans, are also drawn to Ede in spring and autumn. In May and June as well as in September and October, you can still expect temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius in Ede and Gelderland.
