Thanks to its convenient location near the A7 motorway halfway between Hamburg and Hanover, Soltau is easy to reach by car. It is around 350 km from Berlin to the holiday destination. To get there, guests leave the German capital on the city motorway 115 in a south-westerly direction. The A10 motorway branches off to the right at the Nuhetal junction. The next point of reference is the Werder junction, which is the connection to Hanover. From here, motorists turn off onto the A7 heading north. Approximately 720 kilometres lie between the Bavarian capital of Munich and Soltau. The A9 motorway is ideal for those travelling from the south of Germany. The restaurants in Soltau serve typical dishes from the Lüneburg Heath, which are characterised by regional ingredients such as fish from the heath rivers and local vegetables. In spring, asparagus, which grows excellently on the fertile heathland soil, is the favourite dish. The tender vegetables are harvested in the fields from April. Many delicacies come from the Heidschnucken sheep: the delicious roast is served with boiled potatoes, red cabbage and redcurrant jelly. The hearty national dish Heidjer Knipp consists of grilled sausage from Heideschnucke sheep or beef and is particularly substantial thanks to its preparation in apple and onion lard. It is usually served with fried potatoes and pickled vegetables. The coffee is accompanied by crispy Heide sand biscuits made from fine shortcrust pastry.
If you want to see the beautiful Lüneburg Heath bathed in a sea of purple colours, travel to the blooming season in August and September. But spring is also ideal for long hikes and excursions. In May and June, the sun shines for an above-average seven hours a day. The weather is particularly warm from June to August, when the maximum average temperatures reach around 22 degrees Celsius. This is when the surrounding ponds warm up to bathing temperatures. Taking an umbrella to the campsites in Soltau is a good idea due to the frequent rainfall. Rain can be expected nine to 12 days a month all year round.
