A varied and relaxing holiday is guaranteed on the east coast of the French island of Corsica. When camping with children, the little ones can't wait to go swimming on the beach early in the morning. An inflatable boat trip is also an unforgettable experience. If your four-legged friend is not afraid of water, holidaymakers camping with a dog can also take them out to sea or on hikes.

Special features of camping in Ghisonaccia

The campsites in Ghisonaccia are mostly located close to the beaches and are very suitable for beach holidaymakers. Most of the coast slopes gently into the sea, which is why even small children enjoy splashing around here. Active holidaymakers can burn off energy on a holiday on the east coast of Corsica with mountain bike excursions, hikes and climbing tours.

Those interested in culture and the exciting history of the mountainous Mediterranean island can visit the ruins of the former capital Aléria, for example, just 15 km north of the holiday resort. There is also an archaeological museum with interesting exhibits. Delicious food is also part of the perfect holiday in Ghisonaccia. Campers who are self-catering can buy fresh food at the market. There are also quaint restaurants serving typical island dishes.

How to get there

Holidaymakers planning to travel to Corsica by car, caravan or motorhome can do so without any problems. There are regular ferry connections to the island from both France and Italy. Those travelling from Germany usually choose the port of departure in Genoa, as this is the quickest to reach.

From Hamburg, it is around 1,260 kilometres to Genoa via Würzburg, Lindau, Chur and Milan. The shortest route from Munich is around 610 km via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, St. Moritz and Milan to the port. Due to the long distances, especially from the north of Germany, sufficient breaks and, if possible, an overnight stay should be planned.

Ferries from Genoa are operated by various providers, with the express boats being the most expensive and the overnight crossings usually the cheapest. During the holiday season, the ships are usually fully booked well in advance, which is why it is important to make a reservation. Passengers with vehicles should arrive at the harbour in good time so that there is enough time for boarding.

There are several ferry ports in Corsica. If you want to go to Ghisonaccia, you can travel from Genoa to Bastia or from Civitavecchia to Porto-Vecchio. The distance from Bastia to Ghisonaccia is around 87 kilometres, from Porto-Veccho around 57 kilometres.

Top 5 sights

  • Église St. Michel: The inconspicuous exterior of the church is deceptive. Fantastic neo-Byzantine frescoes and impressive paintings by Greek artist Nikos N. Giannakakis await inside.
  • Forêt de pinia: The last large pine forest on the island also boasts marshes, wetlands, tree falcons and the marsh owl.
  • Ruins of Aléria: The remains of the former capital of Corsica with its amphitheatre, necropolis and capitol are well worth a visit.
  • Jérôme-Carcopino Archaeological Museum: The museum with exhibits from the Neolithic to the Roman period is located in Aléria.
  • Cascades de Purcaraccia: The waterfalls and natural bathing pools are a popular excursion destination.

Top 2 insider tips

  • Market days: Every second Thursday, traders from the region come to Ghisonaccia and set up their stalls. Regional foods such as cheese, olive oil, fig mustard and wine are on offer. The vendors can be found until early midday.
  • Snorkelling: Canella beach is a real insider tip. The bay with its fine white sand and impressive underwater world along the rocks is not signposted and can only be recognised by the cars that park there in season. From Solenzara on the T10, it is only around 6.5 kilometres in the direction of Porto Vecchio.

Activities and excursions

Hiking

Around the campsites of Ghisonaccia, unspoilt nature and a well-developed network of paths invite you to go trekking. The whole island of Corsica is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts and active holidaymakers. There are easy stages for the whole family as well as more difficult routes for well-trained hikers. Via ferrata and adventure park

Sporty families can work off their energy in the Solenzara Valley. While the adults climb the steep rocks, which are secured with iron ladders, pins and ropes, the kids can let off steam in the adventure park. The Buccarona via ferrata offers various options for beginners and advanced climbers. Children between the ages of three and eight can try out the baby course. Buccarona's fun climbing park is equipped with rope winches, climbing walls and Nepalese suspension bridges.

Events

Various art festivals take place in the spring and summer months, focusing on photography and dance, for example.

May

  • Ascensionnelles: This photography festival is organised every year on the weekend of Ascension Day. Art fans can marvel at a wide variety of techniques. Professionals from both the island and mainland France come together to exchange ideas. The programme includes presentations, workshops and debates.

June

  • Stars Touch Festival: The Latin American dance festival is held in June and takes place over three days. If you fancy shaking your hips yourself, you can take part in various dance classes. Otherwise, visitors can let the dancers whisk them away into a world full of rhythm and temperament. Big international stars of the scene show off their skills in various bachata, salsa and kizomba shows.

July

  • Artissima: An open-air art festival is held in Ghisonaccia every two years. Art in all its facets is presented at the Corse Orientale rte de Ghisoni. Visitors can see sculptures, paintings, photographs, street art and dance, among other things. Various blues and jazz concerts are also organised. The event always starts at 5 pm and the party goes on late into the night.

Gastronomy

Although Corsican cuisine is similar to French cuisine, it has developed its own specialities, which may also be due to the Italian influences of the past. Many fish and seafood dishes are served in the coastal areas in particular. One popular dish is the fish soup aziminu, which is bound and served with bread and garlic sauce. Meat lovers should definitely try the lean meat of the semi-wild pigs, which are mainly fed on chestnuts.

A savoury delicacy is the rustic stew stufatu made from lamb, pasta and cheese. Side dishes such as ravioli are often filled with the fresh cheese brocciu. Chestnuts grow in many places in Corsica, which is why their flour is used to prepare desserts such as cakes. Local red, white and rosé wines are drunk with food.
