A holiday north of the Arctic Circle is not something you do every day. But if you do, make it Tromsø. The city fascinated me with its charming centre, which lies on a small island in the sea and is connected to the mainland by bridges. With a bit of luck, you can already see the Northern Lights here from September, although I wasn’t fortunate during the five days I spent there. If you dare, you can use the saunas floating directly on the sea and then jump straight into the ice-cold water. When travelling to Tromsø in winter, you should be aware of the very limited daylight. Daylight lamps and vitamin D supplements can help.
My tip: Take the cable car up Mount Storsteinen for a beautiful view of the island. If you’re particularly sporty, you can also walk the 400 metres, although the path consists mostly of stairs.
