The most important works of Italian painting have been on public display in these buildings since the 1580s. If you visit Florence in June, you may be lucky enough to catch a game of the historic Florentine football, the Calcio Storico. In Piazza Santa Croce, teams from the four historic neighbourhoods play the city championship in this medieval forerunner of football.
