This is because many of the impressive buildings are made of brick. The large cathedral has walls up to 6 metres thick and a 78-metre-high tower. The magnificent buildings in the centre bear witness to a time of great wealth: Albi used to trade in woad, a plant from which blue dye was extracted in the Middle Ages.
