Vianden is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in Luxembourg and delights visitors with its fantastic water landscapes around the Our, Sûre and Moselle rivers. Located close to the border with Germany and in the foothills of the Ardennes, camping by the river can be combined with active leisure activities. Camping for horse riders and anglers, for example, is a worthwhile activity on holiday in Vianden.
What makes Vianden in north-east Luxembourg so special are the picturesque green landscapes. Rivers, forests and hills tempt you to go on excursions on foot or by bike when camping in Vianden. The idyllic municipality also has a lot to offer culturally. If you want to find out more about Luxembourg's long history, you can visit the medieval castle, for example, which was once the seat of the county of Vianden. From there, visitors can enjoy a marvellous view over the dense forests of the region or one of the regular medieval festivals. An exhibition on Victor Hugo and his visit to the Grand Duchy is also one of the highlights of a camping holiday in Luxembourg.
The campsites in Vianden are best reached via Rhineland-Palatinate. The federal state lies directly on the border with Luxembourg, where the holiday destination in the Moselle region is located. Many holidaymakers come from the north via the A1 motorway and turn west at Wittlich. The A60 initially leads to Bitburg. From there, take the A50 motorway and finally Vianden. From the A1 it is about 70 kilometres to Luxembourg. The A1 offers almost direct access to Rhineland-Palatinate from Saarbrücken, the Rhineland and Ruhr regions as well as from Bremen and Hamburg.
From the east, many holidaymakers use Frankfurt am Main for a stopover. In the financial metropolis, you can get to know Hessian culture by visiting the exhibitions on the Museumsufer and in the wine taverns of Sachsenhausen. Afterwards, you can head to the Moselle via Koblenz, for example. If you want to see beautiful landscapes while travelling by motorhome, you can follow the river on the main roads all the way to Luxembourg. The route via the A48 and A1 motorways is slightly faster.
The comparatively small area of Vianden fascinates with its breathtaking nature and a touch of history. Anyone travelling to the region can enjoy a holiday by the Our and use the ancient castle as a backdrop for camping.
In the canton of Vianden, Bivels offers campsites directly on the Our with quick access to the nature park of the same name. From the motorhome, holidaymakers can set off on hikes through the foothills of the Ardennes or follow the banks of the river by bike. A trip to the Vianden pumped-storage power station is also worthwhile.
Vianden's main attractions are located to the south of the Our reservoir. The time-honoured castle rises up here and impresses with its medieval flair and great views over the region. Travellers will also find several campsites, an outdoor pool and the Victor Hugo House. In the Musée de la Ville de Enderluchen, you can learn more about the history of the canton.
The many excursion routes along the Sûre invite you to explore the nature park. The river is dammed in the region around Merscheid and forms a lake that is suitable for sailing, canoeing, swimming, diving and fishing. An absolute highlight is a trip on a solar-powered boat.
The best way to discover Vianden's nature is by horse riding, hiking and cycling. If you feel like it, you can also book a guided boat tour on the canton's rivers.
Luxembourg is one of the most cycle-friendly countries in Europe. 23 official cycle paths criss-cross the Grand Duchy and cover over 600 kilometres. On the tour through Vianden, you can admire magnificent medieval castles and the landscapes around the Sûre, Moselle and Our.
The tranquil rivers through Vianden are best marvelled at by boat. Boat trips are offered in many harbour towns, where passengers can enjoy magnificent views of the historic hilltop castles. Pedal boats, sailing boats and canoes are also available for holidaymakers on the lakes in the canton.
Luxembourg's cuisine is characterised by Palatinate and French influences. For example, savoury dishes such as Judd mat Gaardebounen are usually served. This is a tender baked pork neck with broad beans. Traipen black pudding with apple compote is also a real classic. Almost every restaurant also has the Bouneschlupp bean soup and the small Fritür mussel fish on the menu. The latter are perfect as a small appetiser and snack with beer. Another must on a camping holiday in Vianden is the high-quality wine from the Moselle. Most of the wines from here are dry white wines, which are an excellent accompaniment to fish dishes and crayfish.
Most holidaymakers come to camp in Vianden between May and September. This is the best time to get to know the region with activities in the fresh air. In summer, temperatures average around 22 degrees Celsius. During the day, temperatures can even be significantly higher and break through the 30-degree mark. While July and August are ideal for swimming, the months of May, June, September and October are ideal for cycling tours and extensive hikes with milder climatic conditions. Winters are generally not too cold; the temperature rarely reaches freezing point. It is somewhat cooler all year round at higher altitudes in the Ardennes.
